Hunting grounds — Zapadna Srbija

Western Serbia is hill-and-mountain country — Tara, Zlatibor, Zlatar, Golija and the deep canyons of the Drina, Rača and Uvac. Compared with the flat north, the ground here is more demanding and more varied: forested slopes, clearings and high rock. That variety carries over to the game — from classic roe deer and wild boar to genuine mountain chamois on the highest ground. For hunters who want landscape and challenge, this is one of the country’s finest corners.

The game

The backbone is roe buck/roe deer and wild boar, present in almost every hunting ground in the region. The hill country holds healthy populations and good trophies, and the dense forest cover suits wild boar.

On the higher, rocky ground — above all along the Drina canyon and around Tara — there are also Balkan chamois. Hunting them is limited and permit-based, but that is exactly what sets western Serbia apart: access to true mountain game without leaving the country. Some of this ground lies in protected areas (Tara is a national park), so always confirm availability and quota with the ground. It is also bear country, but the brown bear is under a special protection regime and is not open to regular hunting — check its status before you plan anything.

What the hunt is like

The terrain dictates the method. For roe deer and boar the usual approaches are stalking and sitting a high seat, working with a host and gamekeeper who know the animals’ movements. Chamois is genuine mountain hunting — it asks for fitness, solid boots, good glass and patience over long distances and steep climbs. Mountain weather can turn quickly, so plan for it.

Hunting seasons in Serbia are set by law (the game close-season regulation) and can change; the below is only a guide — confirm exact dates with the ground and in the seasons guide.

Getting there

The main gateway for foreign guests is Belgrade “Nikola Tesla” airport. Western Serbia (Užice, Zlatibor, Tara) is roughly 200+ km, about a 3–4 hour drive (check the route and time for your specific ground). A local airport at Zlatibor/Ponikve is in development, but for now plan on a road transfer — easiest arranged through your hunting host. Given the remote terrain, a vehicle or organized transport is effectively essential.
