The wild boar (Sus scrofa) is Serbia’s most popular big game — abundant, adaptable and available almost year-round. That makes it ideal for guests who value flexible dates, and it’s hunted several exciting ways. The trophy is a set of powerful tusks.
Where you hunt it
The stronghold is the lowlands of Vojvodina and the Banat — floodplain forests along the Danube, Sava, Tisa and Tamiš, plus reed beds and cornfields that give boar cover and feed. There are grounds in the hills and mountains too, but black game is densest on the plains. The region holds both the Central European boar and the larger Carpathian (attila) type.
How it’s hunted
Driven hunt
A group winter hunt: beaters and dogs push boar toward guns on stands. Fast, social and typical of the cold months; on top grounds a single day can move large groups of game. Ideal for teams.
High seat
A quiet, individual hunt from a stand over feeding sites or crossings. It rewards patience and a clean shot, and is best at dusk and dawn.
Night hunting
Wild boar is one of the few species you may legally hunt at night in Serbia, as an exception, with an artificial light source (alongside wolf, jackal and fox). Thermal and night-vision optics are increasingly common, but the rules for using them are specific and can change — always confirm them with the ground and the authorities. It’s done from a stand, with a guide and under safety rules.
The trophy: tusks (CIC)
The trophy is the tusks — the lower cutters and the upper whetters. They’re scored under the CIC method (length and width of the lower tusks, and the girth of the upper ones) and reach real value on mature boars, usually from the fifth year onward. You receive a trophy certificate for shot game, and medal trophies carry gold, silver or bronze.
The meat
Wild boar meat is prized and flavorful. Game is vet-inspected (for trichinella); arrange collection of meat or the trophy with the ground.
Season, papers and firearms
Boar can be planned almost year-round, but there are limits (for example, protection of sows leading piglets) and local conditions — see seasons. As a guest you need a passport and a guest permit that the ground arranges — permits. Bring your firearm under a temporary import or rent one; for wild boar no CITES permit is required (it isn’t a CITES-listed species) — CITES & firearms.
