Roe deer hunting in Serbia & the Balkans

The roe buck is the ideal „first” European trophy — affordable, widespread across Serbia, and a hunt that blends quiet stalking with the thrill of calling at the height of the rut. For visiting hunters it is a classic entry into Central European hunting: a well-defined season, a recognisable trophy and pleasant terrain.

The species in brief

The roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) is our smallest deer. The female is a doe, the male a buck, the young a kid. It lives along forest edges, fields and cover strips — from lowlands to hills. Only the buck carries antlers; he casts them in autumn/early winter, grows a new set through winter and cleans the velvet in spring.

Season and best timing

The roe buck season here typically runs from mid-April to the end of September — always confirm the exact dates with the outfitter (see Seasons). There are two peaks:

• spring (April–May): sparse vegetation, bucks marking territory and easy to spot;
• late summer (the rut): peak activity and the best chance to call.

The rut and calling

The rut usually falls from mid-July to mid-August, peaking in late July and early August — the exact timing shifts from year to year and by area. Then the buck, full of testosterone, drops his caution and answers a call. Hunters call by imitating the doe or fawn — traditionally „on a blade of grass”, and today most often with a rubber call (e.g. Buttolo). A „false rut” (Nachbrunft) sometimes appears in late August or early September. Calling is the most exciting way to hunt this species.

Stalking

The main method is stalking: at first light and in the evening until dark, when the buck is most active. Move slowly, into the wind, using cover and binoculars. Where high seats exist, sitting one is the calmer option. Shots vary — from as little as 20–50 m when calling to 100–150 m in the open; a steady approach and a clean shot matter most.

Trophy and CIC score

The trophy is judged not by length alone but above all by mass. The CIC formula combines skull weight (without the lower jaw, with a deduction), antler volume and antler length, plus points for pearling, coronet, colour and regularity. Rough CIC medal thresholds are bronze ~105, silver ~115, gold ~130 points — confirm the current thresholds with an official measurer. The trophy is scored only once dry (weight is taken on the dried skull); follow the required drying period. If it is your first time, ask the outfitter what antler weight to expect for a „representative” medium buck.

For visiting hunters

Arrange your firearm permit and hunting licence through the outfitter (Permits); roe deer are hunted with a rifle, and permitted firearms and ammunition are governed by regulation — confirm the requirements with the outfitter.
